Not sure about the video but this is how i was taught:

ayar kulathinil aanirai meithavan
aadiyum paadiyum koodi magizhndavan
anandam anandam anandam aanavan
aaLil tuyilbavan avanadi panivom

karamalar tanil oru venkuzhal endiya, karmugil varna, kamsa samhara

kalinga nartanamadiya sevadi, naadi nalam tuyar odi olindhidum

vinnum vizhigaladil minnum ninadhazhagu, mannai tindra siru balagane
yashodai manamagil madhavane, kuselan tuyar tanai teerthavane
mayavane madhusudanane, tuyavane, tirumalavane
taka dhiku thaka ena arumarai potridum
thiru muralidhara kavitvame

I also doubt if that is the original choreography by Muralidharan sir as
a. It is a group choreo
b. I am not sure there are supposed to be jatis with shollus in a kautuvam

You may be right madhan. I think personally i will be surprised if it is an original choreo. Because the solo choreo might have been modified for the group..which is still fine...but presence of jathis in a kauthuvam is not the format of traditional kauthuvams..

Shri Muralidharan's FAMOUS shadakshara kavuthuvam also has jathis...! Also all the navasandhi kavithuvam's have a short jathi at the end..!

Sri Muralidharan has provided the nattuvangam for the recording so it has to be his arrangement. Deepa Mahadevan is his student, so the choreography is most like a group adaptation of the original solo.

Yes a big thank you to ksi for the lyrics, that's fantastic. I still need the
word-for-word transliteration, maybe someone has that as well.
Madhan you posted the video clip. Here is another you tube link, very creative choreography by Sri V. Balagurunathan - it starts at 5:04:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsrN0UHJhP8
And Pratyaksham Bala, I will search out Sri Madurai R. Muralidharan on the website, thanks for info.

You mean word to word meaning? Transliteration is just writing words in any language in english phonetics.

KSL - very nice. Some minor corrections/additions:
kulam (kulattinilE) - (in the) clan/dynasty
mAyavanE - illusionist
Alilayil - Ala = banyan, ilaiyil = on the leaf (krishNa is typically represented as lying on a large banyan leaf, with his toe in his mouth - one verse from the mukundAshTakam describes the sight of the little krishNa sleeping on the leaf - vaTasya patrasya puTE Sayanam - karAravindEna padAravindam, padAravindEna mukhAravindam...
vENkuzhal - vEyunkuzhal - vEy - bamboo; kuzhal - flute
Indra (eendra) - one who gave birth/brought forth (which is a misnomer/poetic license here, because yaSOda only nurtured him)
yaSOdai manamagizh
mAdhavan - mA - lakshmi, dhavan - husband (of)
madhusUdananE - madhu - the evil demon madhu, sUdananE - one who killed/destroyed
aru marai - aru(mayAna) marai - the unique/special/rare/pre-eminent vEdas

rshankar,

I was wondering, could it be 'aazhi thuyilpavan' ? (the one who sleeps on the ocean )
I recently choreographed this kauthuvam, and I was almost positive i heard the singer say 'aazhi'
does it make sense grammatically?

Divya - you are correct, it can very well be Azhi tuyilbavan - one who sleeps on the ocean (pArkkaDalin alaigaLumE manjamAi viLanga as another poet says)..since Azhi also means discuss in tamizh, vishNu can be described as 'Azhi Endi Azhi tuyilbavan'

I think the word is Azh => deep => sea/ocean. Discus => Azhi.

Azhi tuyilbavan: Azhil tuyilbavan makes for easier interpretation. Azhi Endi Azhil tuyilbhavan too.

But looks like Azhi can also be used for sea/ocean per lexicon. See lexicon http://dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/philol ... 0.tamillex -

@dnayar, rshankar and arunk

I thought sleeping in deep ocean would pertain to vishnu and not krishna. This is a krishna kautuvam. vishnu does not come into picture until the last stanza where he says tirumalavane.

AFAIK, the attributes of krishNa and vishnu are used very interchangeably by most composers; krishNa is considered to be vishNu himself in Orissa - hence jayadeva's daSAvatAram does not include krishNa as an avatAr, so it is not unusual to have these mixed up in many compositions.

@rashankar: i just noticed your corrections. THanks. Where does indra come in? i didnt know madhavan meant ma+dhavan. Which again pertains to vishnu. I always thought madhavan was used for krishna. So, i am trying to reconcile things. Wikipedia says the following:

"Also in the Bhagavad-Gita, Arjuna address Krishna as "Madhava" (meaning "Lord of fortune and also slayer of the demon Madhu").[1]
According to Adi Sankara' s commentary on the Vishnu sahasranama, Madhava means the consort of Ma, or Mahalaksmi, the Mother of the universe. Alternatively, it means on who is fit to be known through Madhu-vidya or can mean One who is the Lord of "Ma" or knowledge.
Additionally, it can also mean 'one who was born in the clan of Madhu'."

So i guess everyone has their own interpretation.

Jayadeva was obsessed with krishna. I will ignore him. But i was wondering madurai muralidharan wouldnt write that way.,especially when its not a narayana kavitvam. But i guess things are open to interpretation unless we know what exactly he wrote.

KSL - absolutely true - I always used to put a disclaimer that my attemps at 'translations' are my interpretation, and mine alone! WRT mAdhava - I have always gone with Sri Adi Sankara's interprettation, given my advaitic smArta background!
