(Help!) Translation of diikshitar's noTTusvara - he maaye

Post by hridayam-kamalam »

Hi Everyone! I've often searched the rasikas.org archive for help with translations, but this time around I thought I'd just ask directly for some help

I'm teaching - hopefully all 39 - diikshitar's noTTusvarangal kritis to two children. Before we learn each kriti however, I try to translate or find translations of them so that the children know what it is they are singing. We're going to be working on he maaye soon, and this is what I have been able to figure out so far. I'd be grateful if folks more knowledgeable than me would offer alternatives to the translation I've provided! As it is, I am only missing 2 words: kaahitvam - and - yaahi.

the text:

he maaye maam baadhitum
kaahitvam kaahitvam yaahi yaahi
kaamaakshii kaanchiipuranaayakii rakshitum ehi ehi
kaamakoTiishvarii kaamitaartha prade ekaamranaatheshvarii paahi paahi
kaama sanjiivinii sevita srii guro kaulini memudam dehi dehi

my attempt at translation:

he maaye maam baadhitum
He maaye, why do you bother me?
kaahitvam kaahitvam yaahi yaahi
?
kaamaakshii kaanchiipuranaayakii rakshitum ehi ehi
kaamaakshii, chief of kanchiipuram, save me, come to me, save me!
kaamakoTiishvarii kaamitaartha prade ekaamranaatheshvarii paahi paahi
mistress of kaamakoTi, who gives us our heart's desires, mistress of ekaamranaatha, please protect me, please protect me!
kaama sanjiivinii sevita srii guro kaulini memudam dehi dehi
giver of life's desires, served by shrii guro, oh noble lady, please give me great happiness/joy, please!

Looking forward to meeting some folks on this forum!

Cheers,
Hridayam-Kamalam

Here is the translation from a book I have.

O! Maya! who are you to trouble me, go away, go away! Kamakshi, cherished by the lord of Kanchipura, come! Come! to protect me. O! Kamakotishvari!, O!, the giver of our wishes! O! the touchstone of desire!, O! the one served by Guruguha!, O!, the one born of the best of families! give me happiness, give me all I want.

Lakshman, You are AWESOME! Thank you so much for your help! And could you tell me - what is the name of that precious book you have?! If it's still available in India, I could ask my Appa to keep an eye out for it the next time he goes to Giri Trading

The book is titled The European Airs of Muttuswamy Dixitar by M.R.Shankara Murthy. Published in 1990 by Guruguha Gana Nilaya, Banagluru, 560 055. I bought it at KMBC some years ago.

Thank you so much once again! I completed the sheet and have it all (in English, transliterated and translated), including svara notation, for my two young students. I'd be happy to post it or post a link to it if anyone is interested. I will be teaching the song to them today, and I will have my ukulele to play along with us. It will be fun - thank you so much for your help :)
