Hi Coolkarni, coolkarni wrote:this is an interesting question but eay to solve in hindusthani
i am studying my collection of over 30 years -including commercial album, radio programs and concerts.
should be able to get some idea in a couple of days.
Have you come up with some kind of answer to this question ? Even just your most basic conclusion would be of great help...
Thanks !

Here is an excel worksheet which analyses the number of times a raga appears in the music collection.
A few points to be noted about the collection , though.
1.Covers most of the commercial albums avaialble in the Indian market.
2.Has a high content of ALL India Radio recordings
3.Has a very low content of Live Concert recordings ( though the commercial albums have a good sprinkling of live concerts excerpts)
4.ragas like Piloo, kafi, sindhu bhairavi, Dhuns, bhajans ,thumris Misra ragas , ragamalikas have been excluded.
The top ones are
yaman (87) darbari(80) Puriya(78)malkauns(77)Bhairavi(65)marwa (44)bagesree(44)Behag(43)Kedar(38)Miya Malhar(36) Hamsadhwani(35)Desh(32)
Jaijaiwanthi(30)Bhimpalas(26)Abhogi(25)...

No Im not laughing at all. Even without Excel you should have no problems downloading it but only with opening it. I had the same problem before. Anyway you have downloaded it which is good. If you have problems viewing it, click on this link here and download "Excel viewer" and install it. Then you will have no problems.

Excellent data Kji. Thanks.
Just bringing attention to those who are not familiar with excel.. at the bottom of the Excel worksheet, there are multiple work sheets, presented as tabs: They are named 10-87 times, 4-9 times, 1-3 times.
It is interesting that HM gives more prominence to prati-madhyama ( tIvra Ma ) ragas compared to CM. I am making this observation by comparing Kji's list on the HM side with the Lji article and the statistical study at http://www.depauw.edu/library/musiclib/ ... ations.asp on the CM side ( all three approch this from different angles so any observation has to be taken with a pinch of salt ).
