Here's a composition I'd like help identifying. It's possibly a padam, and the sahAna has strong affinities with present-day kAnaDa. It is being rendered by actor/musician/composer Padmasri Chittoor V. Nagaiah (1904-1973).

Sahana

Post by pattu »

Sahana has been clubbed under the 22nd mela in venkatamakhi scheme. Has anyone heard or does anyone sing the Kamalamba Navavarana in Sahana or any other song in Sahana with the Sadharana Gandhara?

(a) Being clubbed under 22nd mELa in venkaTamakhi scheme does not mean sAdhArNagAndhAra is to be present -- even if antaragAndhAra and/or shuddha gAndhAra are present in the rAga. For instance, Ahiri, which uses shuddha riShabha and mostly antaragAndhAra is classified as a nArI rItigauLai janya.

(b) Some people say that sahAna uses an in-between gAndhAra, or a gAndhAra slightly lowered to generate ranjakam, in some piDis.

(c) I have come across a mention of Krishna singing some MD sahAna krti with sAdhArNa gAndhAra, with some swarams also iIrc.

I didn't know about (b), though I am aware that the gAndhAram in nArAyaNagowLa occurs at a lower frequency (especially in phrases like NGRG).

Any examples of piDis where G in sahAna is especially lowered?

I also have a lot of doubt about gandharam in this ragam. While the main diff.between Jujavanthi and sahAna is alleged to be gandharam and both classified as janyams of Harikambhodhi in almost all references I am utterly confused. Will some one throw in some light ?

Following is the reply given by my musician friend who is abroad for my qn.thro mail.It may benefit a few.

Ji,

This can be treated as one among many case of exceptions such as Senchurutti under HK, despite its varied phrases or Khamas still under HK, even though we use a Kakali Nishadam or even still, Anandabhairavi coming under Natabhairavi though we use a Chatushruti Deivatham or an Andara Gandharam.

So, to understand the categorical representation, you got to identify what a Moorchana is, than merely the Arohana Avarohana Scale which gives you a poor idea on how to employ the phrases.

And you can sing a Sahana and Dwijavanthi without using the Sadharana Gandharam.

Sing these phrases to yourself with no changes in the Gandharam -

For Dwijavanthi -

Sa Ni Da Pa Ri
Ri Ga Sa
Ri Ga Ma Ni Da Pa
Ri Ni Da Pa Ma Ga Ma

The main thing to be noted here is, the Ri, when comes directly from Ma is Dwijavanthi and which is sung like Ga Ma Ri is Sahana.

Hope this clarifies your doubt to some extent. However, if you want to know the Moorchanas according to SSP, we may have a conversation sometime on that.

"Of course, Dwijawanthi and Narayana gowla are related to Sahana to some extent. Actually, Sahana used to be Bhaashanga Raag with Anthargaandhara as Anyaswara and was a Karaharapriya Janya in
Dikshitar- Venkatamakhin`s classification." by Kiransurya.
Thanks Vasanthakokilam.
