Anupama Bhagwath@rasayanA on Feb 25th,2012
-----------------------------------------
Mrs Anupama Bhagwat - Hindusthani - Sitar
Gurumurthy Vaidya - Tabla
Day/occasion - Saturday/ Rasayana in association with ambalam

I was about 20 mins late she was playing the end of shree ragam ,that was her first no.She moved on to vAchaspathi it was a small filler for about 10 mins .We then had a break for about 15 mins.

Her main was an evening rAgA , it was in shyam kalyAn. She almost played for about 50 mins , the vilambit for about 20 mins needs significant level of hindustani conditioning. Since I did not have could not really connect . But as she picked more speed and with generally more flair of sitar instrument, I liked her second half much more . I left at the end of this main. I heard offline the 4th number was a jinjOti number.

This is the first time I am hearing a full length Sitar concert .Smt Anupama is intensely classical , she loses in her music and I could not see a sense of any gimmicks that usually comes at times to instrumentalists .

In short the shree to vAchaspathi to shyam kalyan to JinjOti was her concert

The tabla artist gurumurthy was very sensitive to the sitar artist, as much as how few mrudangist like tanjavur kumar play to vainikas like Smt kalpagam swaminathan.

In general I was just browsing this concept of prahaar of hindustani musicians where they generally divide rAgas in time frames . ShyamkalyAn is a prime evening rAgA from 6pm to 9pm . Looks like many rAgas that I like fall in 12 Am to 3 AM and 3Am to 6Am prahaars(It is just my taste). I am sure I will hear those dusk prahaars if I attend more concerts in shaam evenings.

The concert was successful with much much more crowd than the previous ones . In the HINDU paper there was this engagement announcement with Ambalam and Rasayana , incidentally I could spot lot of new faces to the sitar concert .

Thank God our concert did not clash with Sunday's music academy concert of Bombay Jayashree where Jodhpur Maharaj is participating as the chief guest :) That is just happening now .

Rams,Rajumds, nick and his wife and host vidwan TV ramprasadh , along with Hubli shri Sashi kulkarni were present for Smt anupama's concert. Overall , I could see lot of faces who had orientation for hindustani and more importantly instruments, who enjoyed the concert . Rasayana's mission was a successful start in year 2012.

What is shrI rAgam? ;)

Good that she chose a proper Hindustani rAga, shyAm kalyAN, for the main. Am watching a youtube of her playing the rAga now. :D

Sorry. I forgot to the camera , so no photos from my side.

It was a nice concert , very serene, no gimmicks and audio set up was not an assault on the ears.

It was heartening a see a good number of rasikas enjoying the concert and when the artist wanted to finish by 8.40, the audience requested her play for 30 min more and she obliged.

It is hard to say much more than that we had a wonderful evening!

I know less about Hindustani music than I do about Carnatic, and I am certainly less familiar with it. I don't, for instance, know the little clues that tell that a piece is about to end (unless it is one of those that speeds up to a frenzied finale with flourishing teermanum (tihai?)). I was struck by how different the jhor (?) is to our tanum. It seems more like a compromise stage between alap and composition, rather than having the distinctive nature of tanum.

What I do find, though (and I guess I've been finding this for nearly forty-five years, even though I hear very little HM for the most recent third of that) is that this music falls amazingly easy upon my ear and soothes the heart and soul. I do not understand how it can be difficult to listen to. I appreciate that the carnatic rasika likes to know their ragam, feel assured of their talam, and be guided by their knowledge of the words, even in an instrumental recital. Sigh, relax, enjoy! I guess there are technicalities which the HM rasika understands, and feels missing in the CM recital. Equally, there are rasikas like Nageswaran, whose huge scope of musical taste and appreciation easily takes in just about any genre.

I am amazed to know that one of the pieces lasted as long as 50 minutes! Absolutely none of it was glancing-at-the-watch music, although, at around 8.30, I did begin to think of having an hour's drive ahead of me, and, much as in some carnatic concerts, the lighter conclusion to the program was not as good at taking my mind off that as the earlier pieces would have been.

The tabla player was very modest and supportive. Even his solo displays were quite laid back, and merged with the piece being played, without any disturbance. There was very good communication between the two artists, and it was plain that they were enjoying the music. MSG has a way of smiling at the sound from the violin, as if MSG the listener is different to MSG the player. Smt Anupama also had a lovely way of smiling with the music.

Indeed, a wonderful and delightful evening.

A. one-minute explanation

Here is a Sree from Malini Rajurkar at a chamber concert in my hometown - of the 70s

the track starts with a tail end of a lively Tappa and the mood changes to a very sombre Sree .
Ideally listened to, by the window side , at evening . While the Rigours of the day slowly give in , to the Calm of the evening .

Will put up the concert recording and some photos after they are available.
