With reference to http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads ... aNatai.mp3 - is Sanjay singing a mallAri in a vocal concert? Has anyone else ever done this (ofcourse within the participants sphere of knowledge)?

The first ever I heard mallAri was about 10 years ago in a Namagirippettai Krishnan cassette, that also had a thodi (thAmadamEn swAmi). Since then I have become partial to mallAri and nAdaswaram. Good nAdaswaram music, especially long and sedate AlApanais. They just elevate me to a different plane altogether. Unfortunately it seems to be an art in the waning :(

I am not sure if I ever heard a live mallAri ever, inspite of living just next to one siva & vishnu temple each in my childhood. Or may be I never registered it. But I remember the tasty sundal, puliodharai and other prasadams. But mallAri executed properly is just as superb!

I remember Sanjay telling me that he learnt the mallAris he knows from a Nadaswara vidwan - a guru of Sanjay and the composer of the mallAris he renders. The nadaswara vidwan who played @ Shankara...temple??? (i can't remember exactly) told Sanjay it can be sung in concerts too, so with the vidwans permission, Sanjay sings them, even though they haven't really been used as kutcheri items in vocal before.

I have always felt the grandeur of the Mallaris on the Nadaswaram and wished that someone would sing it one day and unravel the talam and sahityam clearly for me. It is great that Sanjay has done it!

mallaris are specially made for nagaswarams when the swami chariot procession takes place. it has specific compositions in specific ragas suiting to individual swami purappadu and traditionally not sung in concerts.
it is a dying art no doubt and should be revived but trying the same by vocalists in concerts can be used not as a matter of routine but as an exception. the dhathu of the compositions are such.
