Ali rE merE naina bAn padi

Post by smala »

Krishnaa, would love a translation from you.

Song starts Naina Baan Padi

Aali Re Mere Naina Baan Padi
Chitt Chadhi Mere Madhuri Murat
Ur Bich Aan Padi
Kab Ki Thaadi Panth Nihaarun
Apne Bhawan Khadi
Kaise Praan Piya Bin Raakhun
Jeewan Moor Jadi
Meera Giridhar Haath Bikaani
Log Kahein Bigdi
Aali Ri Mere Naina Baan Padi

A classical rendition, with some western accompaniments.

Then there is the famous one by Asha Bhonsle for the movies.

.

Here is my trial - another blessing - Meerabai's compositions! :)
This composition is in Rajasthani.

AlI re mere naiNA bANa paDI
O friend (AlI re)! Those arrows (bANa) of sight (naiNA) have struck (paDI) me (mere)!

citta chaDHo mere mAdhurI mUrata ura bica Ana aDI
That enchanting (mAdhurI) form (mUrata) has overwhelmed (chaDHo) my mind (citta), it is fixed (Ana aDI) in (bica) my heart (ura).

kaba kI THADI pantha nihArU apane bhavana khaDI
Standing (khaDI, THADI) on the doors of my (apane) house (bhavana), I have been onlooking (nihArU) on the pathway (pantha) for his arrival from such a long time (kaba kI)!

kaise prANa piyA bina rAkhU jIvana mUla jaDI
How (kaise) should I keep (rAkhU) my life-breath (prANa) [how should I stay alive], without (bina) my beloved (piyA) who is the origin (mUla) of my life (jIvana)?

mIrA giridhara hAtha bikAnI log kahe bigaDI
mIrA has sold (bikAnI) herself in the hands (hAtha) of giridhara, and people of the world (log) speak (kahe) ill about her character (bigaDI).

smala - there is a version by Smt. Vani Jayaram that is also wonderful...

krishnaa - My take of the first line 'AlI rE mere nainA bAn paDI' is slightly different - It was explained to us as: mIrA says - 'Oh sakhI (AlI rE), arrows (bAn) have pierced/fallen on (paDi) my (mere) eyes (nainA)', with the implication being that the second mIrA saw kRshNa, it was as if his intoxicating form (mAdhuri mUrat) pierced her eyes, traveled to her brain (cit chADhI) and finally lodged itself securely in her heart (ur bic An aDi)...

rshankar, do have a link to the Vani Jayaram version?

Krishnaa, I too think its Cupid's arrows piercing her eyes when she saw Krishna, as rshankar has expressed well. :)
