இருந்ததாக நினைவு . அத்தொடருக்கு கோபுலு. மிக அருமையாக ஓவியம் வரைந்திருந்தார். அதில் எதாவது ஒரு இதழ் இப்போது காணக்கிடைக்குமா?

Without any doubt. KS used the folk-songs-style poems found in old palm-leaves (possibly filling in some words, when not clear etc.) and then added the prose in between. ( I used to have a sample chapter, but could not find it now.) As you can see from the Vikatan book cover, the acknowledged author of the Vikatan book "katta bommu kathai" is indeed KSubbu.

கட்டற்ற காளை போல் பொங்கியெழுந்து, வெள்ளையரோடு நேருக்கு நேர் நின்று, வீரசமர் புரிந்தவன் வீரபாண்டிய கட்டபொம்மன். ஓங்காரம் எழுப்பி வெள்ளையனை மிரளச் செய்தவன்.

ஆங்கிலேயர்களுக்கு எதிராக கட்டபொம்மன் மட்டும் போரிடவில்லை. தன்னோடு பல வீரர்களையும் இணைத்துக் கொண்டான். அதில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவன் அவன் தம்பி ஊமைத்துரை. கட்டபொம்மன் தூக்கிலிடப்பட்ட பிறகு அவன் விட்டுப் போன போராட்டத்தை தோளில் சுமந்தவன். வெள்ளையர், பீரங்கி குண்டுகளால் பாஞ்சாலங்குறிச்சி கோட்டையை துளைத்தெடுத்தபோது, நான்கே நாட்களில் மீண்டும் ஒரு கோட்டையை அதே இடத்தில் கட்டியவன். வெறும் மண்ணோடு சில மூலிகைகளையும் கலந்து கட்டப்பட்ட ஒரு 'இரும்புக் கோட்டை' அது.

அப்படிப்பட்ட உண்மைச் சம்பவங்களை பெயர் தெரியாத கவிஞர் ஒருவர் கும்மிப் பாடல்களாக வடித்திருக்கிறார். அந்தப் பாடல்களைத் தொகுத்து வீரபாண்டியனின் வீர வரலாற்றை எளிய மொழியில் கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு எழுதியிருக்கிறார். ஓவியர் கோபுலு விடுதலை வீரத்தைக் காட்சியாக வடித்திருக்கிறார். 1951_ம் ஆண்டு ஆனந்த விகடனில் 'கட்டபொம்மு கதை' என்ற தலைப்பில் இந்தப் பொன் எழுத்துக்கள் தொடராக வெளிவந்தது.

அது இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போராட்டம் முடிந்து அலை ஓய்ந்திருந்த சமயம். மென்மையான சுதந்திரக் காற்றில் ஒரு வீரச் சரித்திரத்தைப் படித்த வாசகர்கள் மெய்சிலிர்த்துப் போயினர். ஆண்டுகள் பல கடந்து விட்டன. புதிய தலைமுறையினர் வளர்ந்திருக்கின்றனர். அவர்களுக்கு விடுதலைப் போராட்ட வரலாற்றை, அதன் தாத்பரியத்தை விளக்கும் அரிய நூல் இது.

It seems that JVP felt that though material from his books were used, the source was not acknowledged in the film-credits. The real difference of opinion was between MPC's account and
the controversial book by ThamizvANan , calling Kattabommu as a robber. The "fight" between the two camps is a remarkable story by itself.

One of his arguments was that KaTTabommu was a telugu (Teleugu mother tongue) and why should he be promoted as a hero by TN!

During my visits to Pudukottai in early1950s I came to know that Kalkandu TamizhvANan was financed and supported in his venture to depict Kattabomman as "a dcoit hounded by the British" by the then Maharaja of Pudukkottai, in order to erase the "traitor" infamy of his ancestors .

Kattabomma Nayakkar, a Telugu, ruled over the Tamil land Panchalamkurichi. When the British East India Company claimed sovereignty over the Tamil land, Kattabomma Nayakkam submited to their authority and started paying taxes to them. Subsequently when the British increased the taxes, he could not pay. He decided to fight the British; but was captured by them and hanged.

In short, in their fight to rule over a Tamil land, the Telugu was defeated and the British won.

Our admiration for puthumaipithan in our growing days was something else, as we all know. He died so young. Otherwise, I would have had a chance of meeting him in a literary gathering, or in the home of our uncle which scribes frequented.

Did Puthumaipithan go to the Hindu College in TVeli?

mI pA SOmasundaram, I had met once at my uncle's. They both were friends from college. Later, when I went to England, he was the one who kindly suggested that I should go to the BBC External Services, to be part of their tamizh broadcasts, which I did for a short while. He had come back to India by then, and I did not meet him again.

Yes. Puthumaipiththan completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tirunelveli Hindu college in 1931.

mI.pa.sOmu's " அக்கரைச் சீமையிலே ஆறு மாதங்கள்” ( came in Kalki) won the Sahitya Academy Award.

மூவருக்குத் தன் நன்றியைத் தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில், தம் ஒரே மகளுக்கு ஒரு பெயரை வைத்தார் சோமு. சிதம்பர இராஜநந்தினி என்று! முதல் வார்த்தை டி.கே.சி.யையும் இரண்டாம் வார்த்தை இராஜாஜியையும் மூன்றாம் வார்த்தை கல்கியையும் ஞாபகப்படுத்துகிறது அல்லவா?
( ராஜாஜி தன்/காந்தியின் பேரனுக்குப் பெயர் சூட்ட வை.மு.கோதைநாயகியைக் கேட்க, அவர் கொடுத்த பெயர்; ராஜ்மோகன் !)

கல்கி மறைந்ததும் , கல்கி ஆசிரியர் பதவி வகிக்க உடனே ராஜாஜி பரிந்துரைத்த பெயர் “சோமு” .இரண்டு வருடங்கள் அந்தப் பதவி. அவர் , கல்கி ஆசிரியராய் முதலில் எழுதியது, கல்கி மறைந்த உடன் வந்த கல்கி இதழின் தலையங்கம். அது இங்கே:

மேலும், பலருக்கும் இன்றும் தெரியாத ஒரு விஷயம். “குறையொன்றும் இல்லை” என்ற பிரபல பாடல் மலர ராஜாஜிக்கு உதவியவர் சோமு. முதலில், கல்கியில் இந்தப் பாடல் வெளிவந்தபோது, ” உதவி: சோமு ” என்று குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறார் ராஜாஜி. ( இருவரும் சேர்ந்து “திருமூலர் தவமொழி”, “முதல் மூவர்” என்ற நூல்களும் எழுதி உள்ளனர்)

அவருடைய “சித்தர் இலக்கியம்” நூல்கள் அருமையானவை.

Puthumai piththan has translated a lot of foreign writers...perhaps more than any other Tamil writer. This effort has not been analyzed enough in Tamil research.
