Sankaran Namboodiri @ Rama navami Koramangala

Post by kssr »

Sankaran Namboodiri- Nalina Mohan- HS Sudhindra - Sukanya Ramgopal on 1.4.2015 for Rama Seva Mandali, Koramangala, Bangalore.

1. Nammamma Sharade - Hamsadwani- Kanakadasa - S
2. Paalisamma Muddu Saradhe - Abhogi- PD - S
3. Pavanathmaja - Nattai- MD - Kandachapu- S
4. Brochevarevaru - Khamas - Mys Vasudevacharya- R sketch
5. Sub Main: KeLano hari thaalano- Kalyani- PD - Sub main R, N&S @ Dhrida bhaktharanu koodi Hari keerthane maadi
6. Raghuvamsasuda - Kadana kudhukalam

13. Thillana - Behag - Lalgudi
14. MangaLam.

Comments:
1. Excellent concert.
2. Voice is sweet and also forceful.
3. Very good accompaniment.
4. Sankaran Namboodiri is totally immersed in music. He feels very word of the lyrics in his body and mind. He tries to transmit it to the audience. It sometimes feels like his asking unconsciously to us "Do you understand"? Highly impactful.
5. Neravals are as a rule very brief- jus a couple of avarthanams.
6. Swarams almost for all songs . He loves the variations and it is truly enjoyable. In the case of mohanam, due to the limitation of the ragam itself, I think he could not show that much of variety and sounded a bit repetitive.
7. A violinist friend sitting by my side pointed out a significant feature. His mouth NEVER leaves its position close to the mike. His head movements are in a lateral way but always keeping his mouth pivoted to its position. She said that he must have practised it a lot as it is normally very difficult to achieve. This makes his singing evenly loud without any diminishing volume when the head turns away from mike 8-) Super, eh!!?
8. Bent upon giving prominence to kannada songs, he, I suppose, went ahead with the initial Sharade songs, although they are not typically "Rama Navami"numbers :)

I have heard Paalisamma Muddu Saradhe in shree ranjani, but being pd krithi possibly there is an abhogi version too. In addition , there is also one more shree ranjani krithi bhuvinidasudai, that way abhogi may be right.

Even to have abhogi and sriranjani and both with kalpana Swaram is no common occurrence. On the net there are very many paalisamma versions.

Sankaran Namboodiri also discusses in detail the meaning of songs and the importance, if he is asked, in which case the number of songs will be less.

Sankaran Namboodiri sings it in Abhogi. More popular versions I've heard was in mukhAri ( TMK , Bangalore S Shankar etc)...and Sriranjani version was also heard rarely.

All,
My frame of reference of shree ranjani is when TRS mama sang paalisamma muddu sharadhE . Makes me wonder if some one tagged then the trs version itself wrongly as shree ranjani instead of abhogi. Some one clarify.

Jayan,
Whose version in shreeranjani you heard this krithi?

Rajesh, There is no wrong tagging. TRS sings this wonderfully in Sreeranjini. I have heard many times and have got multiple recordings. I have heard this song in many ragams including Kalyani- but not heard Abhogi so far.

I'm used to the brundAvana sArangA version, Srikantan and M.S. Sheela singing itin their concerts.

Why is Sankaran Namboodri not heard often? About twenty years ago, I heard one concert of his during the season, and I liked his singing a lot. That was when I started going to the season regularly after many years of exile as it were.

Is he affiliated with a university music college too, as is Serthalai Ranganatha Sarma?

Just now remembered. MS Amma used to sing Palisamma in a catchy Mukhari.

Sankaran Namboodiri came as a prodigy and had enough opportunities in the early stage. I have heard many concerts in 90s in Bangalore. He has a good stock of PD songs also. As it was a difficult proposition for Malayalaees to get established in Chennai till recently (Recent welcme exceptions- Rangantha Sarma and Sreevalsan Menon) he is not featured in Chennai. Similarly Rajkumar Bharati also used to win over Kannada audience by his wide choice of Kannada songs.

No. Probably not regular in Chennai, but usually busy with enough opportunities in Kerala and 'gelf' :D ! I was told he toured Australia last month with a few concerts there.

CRama,
Trivandrum Balaji, Tvm Sampath, Palghat SriRam, Baby Sriram, Palghat Sajiv, N J Nandini are among Genext Keralites who have earned a name in the Chennai circuit. The fact however remains that one has to relocate to the 'carnatic metro' to get noticed!

Arasi,
As far I know,Sankaran Namboodiri did his Masters in Music years back, now a full time musician settled in Kochi. He has been releasing lot of (devotional) recordings and tours a lot.

Pls check if you can download. I haven't used in a long time. Quality should be adequate to identify ragam.
