A Bharatanatyam Recital featuring Shri Chitravina Ravikiran's compositions.

Post by asangeetha »

I had the opportunity to attend the recent Bharatanatyam  dance program, NRITYA NAADA featuring compositions of Shri Chitravina N Ravikiran at the ADA Rangamandira, Bangalore. The dance  was choreographed and performed aesthetically by Dr Lakshmi Rekha Arun bringing out the beauty of the compositions through grace and artistic expression. Bhavana Pradyumna, founder of Carnatic Conservatory of Paris and disciple of Ravikiran provided vocal support and skillfully rendered the pieces with elegance and sensitivity. It was therefore no wonder that the hall was close to full house in spite of the torrential rains.

Shri Chitravina N Ravikiran, the guest of honor  graced the occasion with his presence and shared some perspectives on his compositions which number to about 700 , a considerable feat. Other dignitaries present were Dr M Surya Prasad, renowned art critic, renowned Bharatanatyam couple Shri Kiran Subramanyam and wife Sandhya Kiran and Shri Anoor Anantha Krishna Sharma and Dr Srikantham Nagendra Sastry.  They had high words of praise for Shri Ravikiran’s compositions and expressed the view that it was equally important to present the works of contemporary composers in concerts and dances along with the works of the great composers of the past. The compering was of a very high calibre, beautifully recited in  Kannada by Shri Sugganahalli Shadakshari.

The following pieces were presented: (All pieces presented were compositions of Shri Ravikiran)

• Melaprapti with shlokas on  Lord Ganesha and Saraswathi.
• Bhaskara Kauttuvam in Nattai – Chaturashra Jhampa (composed for Mahabharata operatic dance production for Cleveland Aradhana)
• Kuzhaloodi konjidum azhaga - Adi Tala  Mohanam pada varnam
• Samagana suma brahmarudaina – a krti in Kalyani eulogizing Shiva as the embodiment of perfect music (where the opening syllable of every line is a swarakshara of SRGMPDNS respectively)

• Pancha raga-tala-jati mAlika Tillana in
o Pallavi - Darbari Kaanda (Adi)
o Anuallavi - Bilahari (Roopakam)
o Charanam 1 - Kapi (Mishra Chapu)
o Charanam 2 - Behag (Khanda Chapu)
o Charanam 3 - Madhyamavati (Sankeerna Chapu)
