Sudha & Neyveli debate at BSU: Who's greater-artiste or rasika!?!

Post by Sachi_R »

I just chanced upon a very interesting (although light-hearted) debate organised by Vid. Shashi Kiran at BSU 2017: many stalwarts debate the subject, "who is greater- the musician or the listener?"
I have selected a very interesting segment here where Sudha Ma'am and Neyveli Sir speak.
Click on the link, and enjoy!

I watched that, enjoyed it very much. The only dis-appointment were the two reviewers. Maybe they should just stick to writing :) NSG was brilliant!

Mahesh,
I haven't watched paTTi manRams, but this one kept me tuned in. I have heard Solomon Pappaiah in his tirukkuraL broadcasts and have found him engaging. The other two are seasoned speakers from the paTTi manRam fold, it's obvious. I don't think VSV did badly at all, being new to this. Sudha sparkled in bits. She's a very good speaker though. Still, NSG the ready wit, being well versed in tamizh, was most impressive. He's not just a good speaker but a great conversationalist too. He keeps me grinning whenever he talks :)
As I often say, Shashikiran is a super organizer who brims with new ideas, works hard on them and pulls it off every time! And how we need him!

As a Madurai boy, Pappaiah Sir was part and parcel of my bringing up. My dad was his student in American College. Probably the first time I found him out of depth due to him not being a CM fan. However you can see how he held himself with dignity, a brilliant man, humorous orator par excellence. I agree with you re the reviewers, both mentioned this is their first time in a patti mandram and it's not easy!

SR I think played it safe, while NSG was well just being NSG. He is like this at home as well, I've had very many personal interactions with him. Still remember ferrying him in my old Hero Puch without a license and mentioned that we might get caught, and he replied, "en kitta kacham and kudimi irukku, adjust pannidalam, kavala padadha, road la mattum gavanam irukkkatum, bagvan pathupar" :)

For non-Tamil people, "I have panchakacham and kudumi, we will adjust, concentrate on the road, god will take care"!

This was indeed a unique event that showcased the musicians in a different role.. I guess given the time both Smt Sudha and Shri Neyveli did really well.. however VSV and Ranganathan were a disappointment.. As BB pointed out, the listener was unable to gauge what VSV was talking.. BSU is definitely the talking point before the season 👍

By a coincidence, I too watched it last evening only. It was riveting, but for the two speakers mentioned. Sudha has a good command of Tamizh, may not be extempore, and she has that spark always in her person as when she sings. She made good points, but NSG turned the table on her nicely. BB and Raja are seasoned and stole the show. Raja's sangathi joke had every one in splits.

VSV was being sarcastic that these artistes are not being honest - and sing whatever gets the claps - essentially appealing to Gallery! That was true somewhat up and until recently - I have seen even Saketaraman create frenzy using Kalyana Rama and getting applause!

I don't think that is true of the gen-next youngsters (Nisha, Sriranjani, RKM, Abhishek, KBMK, Amritas, K Gayathri) - music is more towards substance.

As regards YACM 1st gen - not going to comment - TMK has raised the crisis flag - and on reflection that was a struggling generation!
