Thanks in advance.

Ramakriya,
There is an extra h in 'hejjeyanikkuta'...
Is is sankhye illada, or sankhye illAda?

I realize that a few words are different from what is posted on the wiki. Does this difference change the meaning? Could one of you please point out the better of the two versions?

Thanks

I think Ramakriya's version is the correct version, but I just had a few questions about what appeared to be issues with 'spelling'!

This is another of purandara dAsa's compostion that is sung in so many different rAgAs - the wiki gives it as being in SrI - I have heard Sudha Raghunathan sing it in SrI. Smt. MSS, Smt. M. S. Sheela, Sri Vijay Siva, Sri Kadri Gopalnath and the Bombay Sisters have all rendered it in madhyamAvatI, while Nithyashree has sung it in bhowLi. Of these, I like the madhyamAvati version the best, because it was the first version I'd heard. I am not sure what the rAga of Sri Bhimsen Joshi's version is in...it is available on MIO.

I figured that DRS...Ramakriya has to correct that in the wiki!

My post somehow crashed in between..

Thanks for pointing the typos. Have fixed it in the wiki.

Regarding the rAga, my guess is that the srI version predates madhyamAvati and all others; But my guess may not be better than yours ;)

You can listen to Bhimasena joshi's version here:

Regarding "sankye illada bhAgyava koTTu" ( giving uncountable fortune) and shanke illada bhAgyava koTTu ( giving undoubtable fortune) - I think both these look right for the mood of the song.

Regarding "mana kAmaneya siddhiya tOre" (show me the fulflilment of mind's desires) to "manke mAnava siddhiya tOre" (show mind the fulfilment of man) -> I prefer the first one in this context. Even though the latter fits the chandas, the meaning looks contrieved.

About other changes between the wiki version, and MSS version, they are mostly on the (dropping of) vibhakti endings. For example: hejje mEle hejje ikkuta has the vibhakti pratyayas missing and hejjeya mEle hejjeyanikkuta has them. But both understandable in a spoken language.
