So what raga is it actually? If I remember right, G. Ravikiran mentioned in the recent World space radio program that these two ragas are pretty much the same except for the range of swaras that are allowed. Both allow for a range from mandhra sthayi to the madhya sthayi. I think he said that with Navroz, one can go one swarasthana higher. Can someone enlighten us on this? Thanks.rajeshnat wrote:

I can't seem to d/l any of the links. Oh well, will try again. Also,
If the artist chose to sing it with tALa, it could be called kanda padyam(I understand there is a meter involved). There are also other music forms from Andhra like cUrNikA(don't think it fits this category), sIsa padyam, dvivapada(very short) or gadyam. nArAyaNa tIrtha, bhadrAcala rAmadAsa and tyAgarAja are known composers who have employed these forms of music composition.rArA chinnanA - sloKham or viruththam (how do you call it if sung in telegu??) - annamAcharya

Hi I do not understand the fuss being created for deletion of the concert from sangeethapriya site. It wud reach a larger group of people who can download and enjoy this wonderful concert. It is one of the best concerts that I haveheard in recent times. Such unheard of artist deserves to be encouraged. But such a move would be counterproductive. I hope that there is no politics behind this move BFN Ragjay

Hi Vasanthakokilam I saw the post and also the mail to rasikapriya group ,hence my remark.I presume a lot of members of this group are also members of the other forum. My intention was that this artist should get due recognition and a lot more people should listen to her concert and hence the remark. There is nothing more to this. BFN Raghavan

Dear Sri Raghavan, This concert was organized and sponsorted by rasikas.org, and we need to respect sentiments of the artist & the organizers. So, i would leave it to the organizers. I do agree that there is wider reach by sharing with sister group, and also that the concert is archived for future reference.

Here is the chronology to explain better . I am not sure if you have seen the video recording yet.
1.The artist informed before rendering rArA chinnanA as navarOz. But when I and Ram heard we both were thinking only as shenjuruTTi , my frame of reference of navarOZ is more in lakshya feel with a popular MS subhulakshmi number "Krishna mukundA mUrArE"
2. Since I was inquisitive to know the diff between navarOz vs shenjuruTTi ,I asked Smt Sudha rAni . Then Smt Sudha rAni clarified that no I only sang shenjuruTTi and not navarOz which was privately discussed with me and another non rasikas.org rasikA and she said that she announced it wrongly before.
Hence I had to say "Her last emotive rendition of annamAcharya slokham in shenjuruTTi (not navaroz as she had mentioned) "
On a funny note ,when I thought I heard shenjuruTTi of one concert with the doyen Shri ManakkAl@IIT , his son Shri ShrirAm clarifies as yamunAkalyAni after talking with his dad. When I heard Smt SudharAni , it went from navarOz to shenjurutti. Perhaps shenjuruTTi - navarOz-jinjOti -yamunAkalyAni is a spin that is still unsettled in my head. Possibly the problem is more likely only with me or just perhaps there is a minor possibility that artists are also in the same spin.

Thanks rajeshnat. That makes sense. Another point that tallies is, at the end of that song Ms. Sudharani compares her folkish rendition to Sakhi Prana (which is in Chenchuruti.)
Just to clear a confusion I may have caused:
We have a thread on Navroz: http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=55034 which has a link to the Brinda & Muktha rendition: http://www.sangeethapriya.org/~ramasund ... avaeoz.mp3
This song, Hastivadanaya, has resemblances to Kurinji. I probably mixed up what G. Ravikiran was saying on Wordspace Sruthi radio since he also featured Kurinji in that program. He most probably mentioned that Kurinji and Navroz are closely related. Sorry for the confusion.

rasikAs have their own associations to certain rAGAs it seems. I have my own share of them, for sure. SenjuruTTi does not tend to confuse me, though. It has a lively quality. At least I don't know of any piece in that rAgA that has the ruminative (and often slow) pace of navarOZ or kuRinji. Those two sound like sister rAgAs to me...

If it may help folks, here is an audio version of navarOj by Smt Brinda and Smt Mukta.
(The song is hastivadanAya by dIkShhitar.)

I guess people would agree with the similarity of navarOj with kuRi~nji.
