Could some one please identify the rAga in which the composition "yadu vamsa" is sung by MSS ? I do remember having heard this song many years ago. Also, I could not find the meaning of the song in the Carnatica.net reference provided above. English translation also will be appreciated. Thanks.

I think the raga is khamaj (or rather mixed with some elements of it). Nice bhajan rendition by MSS.

dhanO dhAnyO pushpo bhorA amAr dESE - This country (dESE) of ours (amAr) filled with/replete with (bhorA) wealth (dhanO), grain (dhAnyo), and flowers (pushpo) is a beautiful, beautiful song describing India. Isn't this the composition where the poet asks to be born again and again and die again and again in the lap of Mother India?

108 Talas, towards the end, the composer asks to be born in, and die in the lap of Mother India - I forget the words...

There is another moving poem - by, I think, Prem Chand - on the same lines - "I want to remain the petals of flowers strewn on the path trodden by those fighting for the freedom of the Mother land".

AmAr ei deshetei jonmO jenO ei deshetei mOrI

"I was born in this country, I would like to die here."

dhanO dhannye is one of the most beautiful patriotic songs of Dwijendralal Roy.

dhonO dhanne pushpe bhorA AmAder ei boshundhorA
tAhAr Majhe Ache desh ek shokol dhesher sherA
she je shopnO diye toirI she je sritI diye gherA
emon deshti kothao khuje pAbe nAkO tumI
she je shokol desher rAnI she je AmAr jonmobhumI
she je AmAr jonmobhumi she je AmAr jonmobhumI

chondro shUrjO grohO tArA, kothay ujon emon dhArA
kothay emon khele torit, emon kAlO meghe
O tAr pAkhIr dAke ghumiye pOrI pakhIr dAke jege

etO snigdhO nodI tAhAr, kothay emon dhumrO pAhAr
kothay emon horIt khetrO AkAsh tole meshe
emon dhAner opor dheu khele jay, batAsh tAhAr deshe
emon deshti....

pushpe pushpe bhorA shAkhI, kunje kunje gAhe pAkhI
gunjoriyA Ashe oli, punje punje dheye
tArA foolEr upor ghumiye pOre foolEr modhU kheye
emon deshti

bhAyEr mAyEr etO snehO, kothay gele pAbe kehO
O mA tomAr choron dutI bokkhe AmAr dhorI
AmAr ei deshete jonmO jenO ei deshete morI
emon deshti.......

This would probably be a bad job as far as the transliteration goes, but it is one of our favourite Bengali songs, so we could not resist providing the lyrics!!!

AFAIK, this is not a composition of Premchand. It one goes like this:

Krishnaa can correct me, if I have made any mistakes.

Title: phUl kI abhilAshA (the aim/desire of a flower)

cAh nahIn surbAlA kE gehnOn mein gUnthA jAUn |
cAh nahIn prEmI mAlA mein bind, pyArI kO lalcAUn ||

cAh nahIn samrAThOn ke Sav par hE harI DAlA jAUn |
cAh nahIn dEvOn kE sar chaDhUn, apnE bhAgya par iTlAUn ||

mujhE thOD lEnA vanmAlI, us path par dEnA tum phEnk |
mAtru bhUmi par SIsh caDhAne jis path jAyE vIr anEk ||

I do not desire to be integrated into the ornaments that adorn divine damsels |
I have no desire to be part of a lover's garland, to entice his beloved ||

I have no desire to be part of wreaths placed on bodies of kings on their last journey |
I have no desire to be offered in prayer to the Lord, and feel proud of my good fortune ||

Oh gardner! Please pluck me and strew me on that path |
That path that the brave trod on their way to sacrifice themselves for their motherland ||

That was a fantastic job Veenajj. Your Calcutta background certainly helped!!:)

However in the MS version paragraphs 2&3 are not there , possibly for reasons of time. Remember that they had learnt this song directly from Shri Dilip Kumar Roy s/o the composer Dwijendralal Roy.

Instead after para 4 (Pushpe Pushpe) there is a beautiful Sanskrit Sloka (also of Dwijendralal Roy) as follows:

Sung as a Viruttam.

Chandrarkatara Nayanabhi ramaha.
Prabhaswara Bhanthi Kutasvidevam..

Neela Bralagana Tadidreedrisheeva , Swapanava Odhou Chabhi Hanga Koojath (Sung twice)

Different Tala Starts (Misra Chapu)

Roopa Nilayam Atulaneeyam Amita Vaibhava Ramang
Dharani Ragming Tvang Varenyam Janmabhoomi Navami
Mamaa Janmabhoomi Navami , Mamaa Janmabhoomi Navami.

and then begins the immortal para

Bhayer Mayer ....

Did you know that Dhano Dhanya song along with Vande Mataram and Jana Gana was among the possible candidates as the National Anthem..??

Dwijendralal Roy was a contemporary of Tagore.

M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI gave a 78 RPM record of Dhano Dhanya Pushpa varan ...sometime in 1940 . It was a duet with DILIP KUMAR ROY, son of DWIJENDARKLAL ROY, the author of this lovely song. The following videomix gives the bengali song in English transliteration and tamil translation. ( which cannot however do full justics to the bengali original lyric). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2CMG7m0OBQ

Later on after many decades, ( I think , during Bangladesh war and liberation, MS sang this in concert platform . it was in that version, she introduced same sanskrit lines removing the original lyrics 'pushpa pushpa '...stanza.
With all due devotion to MS, the original record is a gem and the concert version , no good.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The lyrics are by Dwijendarlal Roy, a famous poet and writer of Bengal of 1910. This is his immortal song in glory of his motherland Bengal. Whatever he says fits perfectly with almost all the states of India and so has become a national song. Add to that the dulcet and silken voice of MS ( she was 24 then) and the majestic voice of Dilip Kumar Roy ( Dwijendarlal was his father..and it was Dilipkumar Roy who taught MS this song..) . It is a pity that the lyrics in Bengali script and Devanagari script are hard to locate. Only, English transliteration and translation are available. I have attempted tamil translation but what I write in four sentences, the original bengali packs in just 4 words! still!.....Share widely please. .write your views to [email protected]

Dhana Dhanya Pushpa Bhara “Lyric”:
Dhana dhanya pushpa bhara, aamader ei bashundhara.
Taahar maajhey aachey desh ek, shokol dhesher shera –
O shey je shopno diye toiri, shey je smriti diye ghera!
Emon deshti kothao khunjey pabey nako tumi –
Shokol desher raani shey je, aamar jonmobhumi!
Shey je aamar jonmobhumi! Shey je aamar jonmobhumi!

Kothay emon khaley toreet, emon kalo meghey?
O taar paakhir daakey ghumiye pori, paakhir daakey jegey!
Emon deshti kothao khunjey pabey nako tumi –
Shokol desher raani shey je, aamar jonmobhumi!
Shey je aamar jonmobhumi! Shey je aamar jonmobhumi!
Ato snigdha nadi kaahar? Kothaay emon dhumro paahar?
Kothay emon haritkshetra aakashtoley meshey?

Shey je aamar jonmobhumi! Shey je aamar jonmobhumi!
Pushpey pushpey bhora shakhi; kunjey kunjey gaahey paakhi;

Shokol desher raani shey je, aamar jonmobhumi!
Shey je aamar jonmobhumi! Shey je aamar jonmobhumi!
Bhai-er maa-er ato sneho kothay geley pabey keha?
O maa! Tomar charanduti bakkhey aamar dhori –
