For years, I though that this was a composition of GKB (in my defense, I think that the confusion is understandable
)
This composition expresses the composer's intense desire to go to cidambaram, see the temple, and witness the AnandatANDavam before he becomes incapacitated with the ravages of old age!

Should I not see (kANa vENDAmO) the temple spire (gOpuram) that reaches into the heavens (viNNuyar) when I have the faculty of sight (iru kaNN irukkumpOdE = even as I have two eyes).
A: vINil ulagai shuTri shuTri vandAl mEdini pOTrum cidambara dEvanaik-
What is the purpose of futile (vINil) circling around (shiTri shuTri vandAl) this world (ulagai) if one does not see (kANa vENDAmO - when the AP is combined with the P) the Lord (dEvan) of cidambaram who is praised (pOTrum) by all living beings on this earth (mEdini)?
C1: vaiyattinilE karuppaiyuL kiDanduLLam naiyap-piravAmal aiyan tiru naTam
Isn't this life of ours (vaiyattilE = in this world) where we are caught in the never ending cycle of birth (karuppai = womb), or the soul (uLLam) emaciating disease (naiya) we call birth useless if we do not see the divine dance (tiru naTanam) of the great lord of cidambaram, Siva/naTarAja (aiyyan)?
2: OTTai shaDalam oDunga veTrelumbuk-kUTTil irunduyir OTTam piDikkumun
As this hollow (OTTai) body (SaDalam) crumbles (oDunga) with infirmity, and before (mun) life (uyir) ebbs/runs away (OTTam piDikkum) from this mere (veTru) shell (kUtu/kUDu) of (skin and) bones (elumbu), should we not go to cidambaram and feast our eyes on the cosmic dance by the divine naTarAja and his lovely sivakAmasundarI?

Please correct this - I am certain that the very highly philosophical C1 has numerous errors...

Thank you so very much Ravi Sir.KVN has sung this song in one of AIR Release (accompanied by MSG & Trichur Narendran ) which is so divine, you love to listen to this song any number times. Portions of the song I could understand , but as the tamil becomes complicated, it definitely requires a master's hand so that the beauty of the lyrics can be understood. Really excellent lyrics . Moves the mortals to some other plane altogether. I have visited Chidambaram and had sung "Isa Pahimam" Of thyagaraja in Kalyani. Now I will try to master this song & with all your inputs as the emotions gets totally charged, would love to sing this song in Chidambaram .

Yes, mEdini is the world.
You are philosophical enough in the first verse. I merely see the 'uLLam naiyya' as worldly strife and of course, as a result of being born into this world.
No skin, just the skeleton (elumbuk kUDu), doc! A poet in kannada called it takkelubina panjara!
I still get a bit foggy when it comes to remembering the identity of the composer of this song. One of Sivan's best, I would say, and the impact of it can be equaled to GKB's. I am getting to the 'foggy' stage in life too, and when I heard KVN sing it, I was moved, but was not old. Nowadays, when Sanjay or Aruna sing it, I feel as though they are addressing me:)

Cidambaram is a divine place of chola kingdom. The railway station is situated in the Madras ( Chennai)- Thiruchi route. Long back this was a forest of "thillai" trees & hence the name "Thillai Vanam." ( I beleive these trees are now no more existant in cidambaram. Thillai trees are now seen on the banks of HinnIr near PicHavaram. Since vyAgra pAda had worshipped in this shrine this place is also known as perumpatraPuliyUr ( perum + petra - sincere devotion ? ), chith + ambaram ( Akasha- Sky), cidambaram are the other names. The thillai brahmins have worsippped shiva and have gaurded this Excellent Shiva Shrine. Rishi Jaimini's 'vEdapAda sthava' , shiva's blessings on shEndanAr's , mAnikya vAchakar sang ' thiru vAchaka' & 'thirukOvaiyAr' and attained salvation, all these events occurred in this shrine only.
vyAgrapAda, pathanjali, upamanyu, vyAsa, planet shukra, thirunIlakantar, nandanAr, kanambbulli nAyanAr and many other saintly divine persons have attained salvation in this very old shrine. The brahmins of thillai known as Dikshitars who have settled here for ages perform the daily pujas( rituals ) at this shrine.
