This is astounding. The veena is a matchless instrument at the hands of people like this.

And the cognoscenti said that Smt. MSS carried it in her throat!

srkris, rshankar: Yes, indeed. Concerts like this will sure turn people to appreicate and enjoy the Veena. The Begada piece made me look for other Begada renditiions to see if they compare. I have not found one yet.

I also did not hear the tala string clangs. Makes it all the more pleasant.
Was it not used?

Suji,
I am enjoying her music at the moment. The very same thing that you mention makes her playing even more sweet sounding. It is soothing. Is it sliding rather than 'sounding' that makes it so? The tALA strings can be overwhelming with some vainikAs...

My thanks to Jayshri and Jeyaraj for hosting this concert. Much has already been written about it but I will certainly remember the Kalyani and Shubha Pantuvarali for while. Mami said, as she was leaving "vayasu aayiduthu, vaasikkamudiyalai"...if this was the result of "vaasikkamudiyalai" (can't play) one can only imagine what she must have been in her prime...

Such clarity. Such pure, faultless melody - each piece was a journey along Deekshitar's imagination! I must listen to Veena concerts more often!

I hope to put up some photos soon but my internet connection is going to be rather sluggish for the next few days

We must thank Kulkarniji and others at rasikas.org for having given us the opportunity to host this great concert. For us it really stood out for one major thing. Mami's greatness proved in no small measure that by employing the right technique and approach, veena concerts can be made as enjoyable as vocal concerts, without having to compromise on classicism. And speaking for those of us who were fortunate to be present on that day.. what can we say... it was definitely an occasion which will be etched in our memory for a long long time to come.

Ramakrishnan, thanks for sharing the audios and photo.

Just heard Sri Sathyanarayanam; What a glorious aalaapanai! What glorious playing! It sounds so divine! It must be true that a good veena player can even melt mountains!!

Incidentally, this was the first time Kalpakam maami used the magnetic pick-up: it was affixed to the veena that Sri Jeyaraaj and Smt Jaysri had lent her. It did take some time for maami to adapt to the combination of pickup and new veena, and it wasn't until song III or IV that she got comfortable with it. But, as she remarked later, the magnetic-mic picked up the subtleties of phrasing that regular amplification (read: ordinary dynamic mics or even the transducers+amplification) would not be able to. I suspect that the miking contributed significantly to the reach of her music at this concert.

Vijay, another facet to your talents--artistic photographer, artful dodger too. But I bet Rajesh has captured you in his own inimitable way and will caption the pictures as well. Nice shots of the performers and reviewers too...

Updated the titles...Arasi, with cameras these days, the photographer's role is really very minimal. Anyway, I am happy you liked them

Dear Isai Rasigan,
While we are all very thankful to you for the joy you have brought us through these uploads, I don't want to sound ungrateful. But I want to point out that #11 vis'wanAthEna samrakShitO'ham - sAmanta - Adi - is missing. Did I some how miss it? If not, would you continue to be generous and kindly upload this kriti also?
Thanks very much.

Thanks, Vasanthakokilam, for pointing out that the Samantha kriti was already there. I was in a hurry to download and listen. Like a child in a toy shop, I was just walking around in "Dikshitar" space.

An enchanting concert from Mami. Thanks to isai_rasigan for the same. Mami’s version of the rare Samantha "Vishvanathena Samrakshitoham", interestingly seems devoid of D3. Given SRJ's Mama's / Vedavalli mami's renditions of Samantha, this is odd, unless I missed hearing it in Kalpakam mami's version..:(

Thanks a lot Bharathwaj. Wonderful veena nAdam.

May I suggest that the review portion of this thread could be moved concert review section as more people are likely to look for reviews there. Infact I was looking for the review for the above concert in that section

We had our first major snowfall yesterday as a prelude to the oncoming Winterr blast. Then what a refreshing heartwarming 'cool' breeze reminiscent of the Spring. What a treat it is to see the beaming familiar Rasika Faces again.
Thank you Goddess kalpakamika !
