Nice review. My question, of putting them in MA prime time, is getting strong.

Vijay, your reviews are getting quite unique and specialized by the day. Good job. Keep going. After the flights of fancy, you safely brought us down with a smooth landing. Now I am eager to listen to the Hyderabad Brothers to see how much of a contrarian one has to be to enjoy them.

Thanks VK and GRS...reading the report I find that I have completely poor Raghavavchary (presumably the elder one - I always get confused)...while he did not a major role in the alaapanas, except briefly in Tohdi, he was in his element in the krithi renditions and swara passages and generally provided a fine couterbalance for his more adventurous brother. My apologies for the omission.

Anyone who is curious about music ought to listen to Hyd Bros. Not everyone will like it but there is a lot to learn. No wonder there were so many learned people in the audi.

A small correction, It ws not tisram alone, It was chatursram (Kandam, Tisram and Misram).

The Poorvangam Part and the Uthrangam part is evenly divided into Kandam, thisram, and Misram.

The beauty of the korvai is Kandam will be played only with solkattu of Kandam and tisram with tisram and misram with misram (this includes the karvais also).

Kandam = Thathikitathom in the First part
Kandam = Thakita thom thathi kitathom In the second part and so on for thisram and misram.

Thisram = Thatheekitathom in the First part
Thisram = Tha. Thakita thom thathi kitathom In the second part and so on for misram.

Misram = Thath theekitathom in the First part
Misram = Tha. Tha. Thakita thom thathi kitathom In the second part.

Regards

>>>They soldiered on, however, to produce an enjoyable tani in which Mishram singled out for exploration and eventual reduction, >>>laying the pitch for a classic KRM Korvai of four Avarthas in Chatushram and Tishram

Any reviews on last 2 concerts of Hyderabad Brothers. I hope we are there for next year Chennai Season. Really missed listening to Sudha Raghunathan, Sanjay Subrahmanyam, TMK, and definitely Hyd. Bros.

vijay - did not take notes and so don't remember most of the details now. But here it goes - not sure if I got the order right too.

AbhOgi varnam
A krithi in hamsadhwani - S
mApala velasika - asAveri - T
ninnuvinAga - pUrvikalyANi - SS - RNST
niravati sukhada - ravicandrika - T
A krithi in a raga I could not identify
A krithi in yamunAkalyANi

Like I mentioned elsewhere the concert was about 1.5 hrs only of which most of it was taken by the pUrvikalyANi piece which was rendered very well.

Strange to see Hyd Bros being given 4 PM slot at PSS which is normally for sub-seniors.

I heard them sing Purvikalyani at KGS. It had a lot of HM prayogas especially MRG - which I thought sounded nice but came in for brickbats from SVK

S. V. Krishnan is the music critic for The Hindu.

Any name ending with -moorthy, such as Ramamoorthy or Krishnamoorthy, can be ruled out for Iyengars,

When SVK becomes older and decrepit, maybe he will start calling himself S V Krishnamachary; right now, he is content with being just S V Krishnan.

"He calls spade a spade" my foot! The guy calls even a fork, a spade.

IMO, he has been out of touch with the scene for many many years , and hence his reviews are irrelevant junk. The only useful purpose maybe for people want to learn how to be spiteful and smart-alecky, or for those who love reading unsavory comments about certain artists in public. For the latter, he does abundant service, as he trashes just about everyone left and right.

I agree with Arun and Vijay, the review wasn't objective.

SV Krishnamurthy = Music Critic of the Hindu

What is HM prayoga and MRG? Sorry I am technical savvy but have tremendous passion for it.

M2 R1 G3 - is a phrase that is very predominant in Hindustani (HM) renditions of Puriya Dhanashree (Pantuvarali)....it lends a distinctively HM colour to renditions of Purvi Kalyani/Pantuvarali...

Thanks Vijay. I see I have quite a bit of learning curve out here.
