I like attending Srilatha’s concerts mainly for her soulful and comprehensive alapanas. They bring out the shades of the raga so well. Today was no different. Neelambari was an unexpected, but pleasant surprise as the second piece of the evening. Both alapana and kriti rendering was very emotive. Dharmavati and Madhyamavati alapanas were superb too, though her voice was breaking slightly in the upper octave. Two rare devaranamas at the end, and both had very nice sahitya.

Nalina Mohan was good on the violin as usual, with smooth, short sketches of the ragas. Both Mridangam and Kanjira were good, but the Tani avartanam was completely marred by the cacophony of horns and screeching brakes of the Malleshwaram 8th cross traffic… This effect was mostly hidden by the rich, open-throated singing of the vocalist during most of the concert, but was really annoying during the tani. The audience was pretty inconsiderate too, floating in and out throughout the kutcheri...

Sowmya,
Another vocalist whose concerts I have missed. Was happy to hear that she sang a sanskrit composition of our DRS in her Mysore concert recently. How nice it would be if we can get to hear it on the forum!

I shall listen to this... Ya, Srilatha generally provides quite a lot of variety in composers and compositions chosen. I attended her concert on Oottukkad compositions some time back. That was very well done...
