Thank you, braindrain.

From the video, it appears like Damayanthi talking to the swan. Can anyone translate the padam.

Ok, here is my attempt ( not a word by word traslation), Experts please correct/add appropriately...

Dear Swan, who is the 'vAhana' of Brahma ( kanja - lotus flower ; kanjabhavanan : who stays in lotus flower), I have seen you so near ( kanDEn nikaTE ).
heard your sweet talk( kaLivAkku kEttEnE). You are beautiful ( kamrarUpa ) and your words are sweet ( atiramya CADu vachanam)

Who have sent you ( prEshakan) ? is it Brahma ( kamalajan) , where are you from ( paramapadam) ? Are you from Naishadhapuram ? Wherever you are from, I respect your story ( tE Caritham naumi)

Hey naLinAsana varavAhana ( who carry brahma ) , please tell me about the good deeds of NaLa. Your words reduces my sadness ( azhalmOCakam) and are blessing to my years ( karNamAraCaya puNya).

Hey kindhearted ( gurukrupakulASaya), if you be of my help ( tuNayAkilO) I will tell you my feelings and longing.

Doesn't his padam fall under the category of 'annam viDum tUdu/dUtu'? - using a swan as a messenger - another one is of course, Sri Subbudu's valaci varNam, 'annamE aruginil vA'! This particular one is the prelude where damayantI appears to tell the swan that she will confide her innermost thoughts and feelings, if the swan is ready to become her companion....

Doesn't tuNai mean companion?

In malayalam, does the word paramapadam carry the meaning of 'place' in addition to 'divine feet' or 'great feet'?

tuNai can also mean companion. Here Damayanti wanted his help/support ( yes , companionship). paramapadam in this context is your divine seat or place. Hence translated so.

Originally, this padam was tuned in kAmbOji ( called kAmOdari in kathakali music) . However, of late , this is sung in khamAs.

Thanks, braindrain & rshankar. I am not familiar with Kathakali mudras. So, knowing the meaning helps.
Although, I guess it has to be the other way around:)

You are right. Padams are the dialogues. The artist have to show mudra to match the singing. On the other hand, the singers have to continue the same line, until the mudra is completed (it takes a couple or more times).

This is a kathakaḷi padaṁ from the "dakṣayāgam" āṭṭakathā of irayimman thanpi. IINM, this scene describes Parvati pleading with paramaśiva to give her permission to attend her father's yāgam. It is also a popular piece in concerts. Appreciate if someone could give the running meaning.
