Can I please have the lyrics for the two songs-Radha Sametha Krishna(also, who is the composer of this song?), and Theeradhu Vilayattu Pillai of Sri Bharathiyar.
Thanks,

Ravi, I was just making corrections when I saw your post. You have taken care of some, and here are some more. As you well know, not all the verses are sung or danced to. Reason? 1. Too lengthy a piece. 2. Even the great Bharathi got carried away here and wrote some extra verses (the 8th, for example). I would think that the edited version as we know it is just fine in capturing the mood...

corrections:

2. manamagizhum
6. kaTTeRumbai
7. pirindu pOi
8. mULi yAvarkkum
9. sazhakkan ALukkisainda paDi

more corrections welcome, if any.

Yes, gItam paDippAn--paDippadu also means singing, besides reading. pATTu paDippadu is used in southern tamizhnadu.

Arasi,
Thanks for your explanation...
Many of the songs as they are currently popular have more charaNams than are usually rendered...a few examples are yArO ivar yArO, kANa vENDum laksham kaNNgaL, dikku teriyAda kATTil....
As far as tIrAda viLaiyATTu piLLai, I think it first became a big success through the medium of movies, with Kamala's exquisite dancing to Vazhuvur Ramaiah Pillai's choreography: and most movie songs have a time limit...to cater to the short attention span of the average movie-goer! That is how, I think, just a few representative charaNams were chosen. Incidentally, for the movie song, DKP has sung a scintillating swara passage at the end (I am sure it was done to show off the Vazhuvur nrtittam), that I have not heard in later concert versions.

Reminds me of a similar thing in the English language. You play at a recital and recite at a play :)

S-P, if you want to see the very best vocal-dance combination, you have to get the original clip of Smt. DKP (vocal) and Kum (as she was then) Kamala (dance) - outstanding - samAna rahita - performance. At the end of the song, a set of ciTTasvarams are sung and danced to - sort of goose-bump raising experience. Smt. Kamala's abhinaya is so understated and all the more powerful for that.

No! GNB popularized it. Authorship has been variously attributed---including Papanasam Sivan. But no verification is available so far, to my knowldege.

Here it is - turns out, I was wrong about the ciTTasvarams - just nRtta at the end.
