suLLU nammallillavaya suLLe nammane dEvaru
= we don't lie, un-truth is our home diety
= peple preach against lying, but lie themselves.

I have compiled a part of the lyrics from hearing a rendition. Can someone share the lyrics please?

P: suLLu nammallillavayya suLLe nammane devaru

C1: bekku bhakkari mADoda kaNDe iliyu oleya chachoda kaNDe
Mekki kAyi kandenappa tekke gaDatara

C2: kappe pAtara kuNIyoda kaNDe Yedi maddaLe varisoda kaNDe
meNasinakAyi kaNDenappa onake gaDatara

C3: arasina bittOda kaNDe gasagase eNisOda kaNDe
purandara viTTalana pAdava kaNDe parvata gaDatara

Meaning:
P: We don’t speak lies sir, (but) Un-truth(suLLu=lie) is our family deity

C1: I saw the cat making rotis (i.e cooking), the mouse cleaning the oven (fireplace = chulha) and saw bitter apple (see Note) being embraced (being eaten in quantities); saw all these massively(truly=really).

C2: Saw the frog managing vessels, and saw the crab playing the mridanga (maddale), Saw the chilly used as a paddy pounding shaft, saw all these empirically.

C3: saw turmeric being sprayed (see note), and poppy seeds being counted;
saw the feet of purandaravitala, like a massive mountain.

Note: Bitter apple (mekke kAyi) is used as a medicine. Turmeric is grown by planting shoots from the tuber, not by spraying seeds like rice/paddy. Poppy seeds (gasagase = kasakase) can only be weighed or measured, not counted because they are tiny in size.

This song might have some other parallel meanings too - which I will try to find.

C2 -> kappe pAtara kuNida kanDe - It means "I saw a frog dancing" not "managing vessels"

kappe pAtara kuNiyOda kande = "saw frog dancing vessel/s" and not "I saw a frog dancing". Please dont leave out the word pAtara=vessel/s. If a fourth standard child had written this language the teacher would have surely failed him/her. But since purandaradasa has already passed, we need to read a cogent meaning to it. Besides, this is poetic language.

The term could mean "I saw the(a) frog jumping around among vessels". But that meaning would not be compatible with the general overall import of the krti, and hence I used the term used, which I think is very near the message sought to be conveyed. Instead of "managing vessels", it could also be "saw frog washing vessels" or "saw frog arranging vessels"

murthymmg,

No- I'll still have to contradict what you say;

pAtre = vessel. Colloquially, could be pAtara.

But,

pAtara = dance, to dance, abhinaya, act
pAtaradavanu = actor,dancer (male) pAtaradavaLu, pAtaragitti = actress, dancer(female)

This is what G Venkatatasubbaiyya's dictionary says:

೧. ಪಾತರ (<ಸಂ. ಪಾತà³ÂÂ

Yes. This could be one possible meaning. I would modify the meaning of charana 2 to read:

Saw the frog dancing a role (in a drama), and saw the crab playing the mridanga [could also mean -saw the frog managing vessels, and saw the crab playing the mridanga (maddale)], saw the chilly used as a paddy pounding shaft, saw all these empirically.

There is some discussion about this song in the following link. It is in Kannada. Look at readers comments as well in the same page.
